Move safe

Move safe

Getting out and about can be a welcome change of scenery for you and your baby. Car seats, prams or strollers and baby slings/carriers can help you move about with ease.

Here are a few simple steps you can take to help keep your baby safe when you’re on the move.

Steps for moving safe

  • Some baby products are required to have minimum safety information or features. Check Australian safety standards and bans to find out if these extra requirements apply – if they do, look for labels that show compliance with the standard.
  • Products may be removed from the market if they are not safe. Check if a product has been recalled in Australia or overseas by visiting the Product Safety Australia website and the OECD GlobalRecalls portal, and consider registering to receive up-to-date recall alerts.
  • Buying online? Look at photographs and the listing description carefully – they should include warning labels and the age range the product is designed for. If the supplier doesn’t provide this information, don’t buy the product – it’s not worth the risk.
  • Research the product and supplier. Online ratings and reviews are a great source of information, too.
  • Always harness your baby in a pram, stroller, car seat, baby sling or carrier.
  • Do not wrap your baby in blankets or other swaddling before putting them in any type of safety harness. If you put a blanket on over the straps, make sure it’s not near your baby’s face and they’re not overheating.
  • It may be tempting when you’re busy, but never leave your baby to sleep unattended, or for long periods, in car seats, prams, strollers or baby slings and carriers.
  • Make sure the product is right for the age and size of your baby. Using products that your baby has grown out of, or hasn’t grown into, is dangerous.
  • Always read product warnings and labels and follow instructions for safe assembly, use and maintenance.
  • Regularly check for wear and tear – don’t use a damaged product.
